ESPN 2 Airs Triple Crown of Polo from Aiken and Santa Barbara
Two-hour special on Sunday October 7th 3pm ET, noon PT
Aiken, SC --- The sport of polo and its historic ties to Aiken take center stage on Sunday when ESPN2 airs the two-hour special filmed during the recent third leg of the Triple Crown of Polo finals at New Bridge Polo and Country Club.
"This is another first for Aiken and for polo," said Triple Crown of Polo President, David McLane. "ESPN has never given polo two continuous hours of airtime before - and we are delighted to have the show from Aiken showcased in a prime time spot." The telecast is presented by Lexus, the official automobile of the TCP Championship Series, Tiffany & Co. and the City of Aiken.
In 2007 the Triple Crown of Polo was played at the Sarasota Polo Club, the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club and, for the first time, at the New Bridge Polo and Country Club in Aiken, SC. Sunday’s show includes the finals of the 22-goal Triple Crown of Polo featuring New Bridge and Tres Hijas, as well as footage from the Santa Barbara finals when Zacara defeated Piocho Ranch.
Besides action on the field there will be player profiles and a feature on the 125th anniversary of The Aiken Polo Club and Whitney Field and the black tie ball that took place to commemorate the historic year in Aiken’s polo history.
San Diego will replace Santa Barbara as the second leg in 2008. As a prelude, Sunday’s show will feature a profile on the San Diego Polo Club and its President, Chris Maloney. Honoring the past, present and future of the sport, the Triple Crown of Polo show will include footage from the USPA intercollegiate polo championships filmed in Lexington earlier in the year.
"We wanted to show polo from all the venues," said McLane. "We hope the audience will begin to understand the sport and that the show will build interest in the players and the polo way of life."
The Triple Crown of Polo continues to build as a the most widely-televised polo tournament worldwide with shows airing on ESPN 2 and reaching 196 countries in 12 different languages via ESPN International.
